Most of us who has been in a long distance relationship can relate to how difficult it can be at times. There are moments of joy and there are moments when you miss your partner so bad it is hurts. Then, there are moments when you will have a sudden feeling of desperation.
If you do not get busy doing other things, it will be so easy to drown yourself in the misery of missing your partner. In fact, these feelings of desperation may occur so often you will realize you really need to get busy!
So, what are some of the things which you can do to prevent or cope with those feelings of desperation which may arise as a result of being in a long distance relationship? From personal experience and that of some of my friends and acquaintances, as well as reading on the internet, I’ve come up with some of the things you can do to make yourself enjoy life and still maintain a healthy long distance relationship…things which can help fill the void regardless to how independent we may be.
Spend Time With Family and Friends
If you are the type who likes to do fun things with friends when you are not working, call up some of your most jovial friends and go out on a fun date. For those of you who are not working at the moment or who work from home, you can easily drop everything and call up one of your available friends to go out on an adventure.
In the Caribbean where I am living, when I get these sad moments I hit the beach. Most of the days are quite sunny so the beach is always one of my go to places. Even when my friends are busy, I still grab a bikini and have a go at practicing my swimming.
If you live away from your relatives, you might find a visit may be very uplifting. There are days when I just catch a bus and visit my mom, siblings, or my son on the other side of the country. If you have not seen your relatives for a while, this can make way for some real conversations and help take your mind off things. Personally, after a day of catching up I feel much more grounded.
Write Your Partner A Letter Or A Poem
There are those days when you just cannot help expressing your feelings. If you feel that texting your partner is not an option, you may want to try writing a letter and telling him/her how much you miss or appreciate them.
Remember to make sure you take into consideration the sex of your partner. Take my friend K for instance, she loves receiving “I miss you” texts from her partner; however, K claims her partner prefers when she tells him something she appreciates about him, whether it be a personality trait or something he may have done for her.
Just in case you are wondering which medium to send these letters via, I will suggest putting as a word document and uploading it via his Facebook messenger so he can read when he is not busy. For shorter text that is easy to read you can send via mediums such as ordinary text messaging, Whatsapp, and IMO. Or, if you are feeling adventurous, you can go for the good old way of sending letters via the post…go ahead and give him a surprise!
What are some of the things which make you feel beautiful or handsome? Anything from a new hairstyle or cut, hair treatment manicure, pedicure, a facial, a body and or foot soak, exfoliating your lips or a combination of all might just up lift your spirit! Guys, I know you must be cringing at some of these beauty suggestions, just pick the ones that you find applicable to you.
While I dream of the days when I can just go to the salon and get my nails done or get a facial, for now I make do with my own at home made beauty treats! Whichever you choose, find the time to take care of my body. You might find weekly or forth nightly scheduling very helpful. As a general rule, I believe in taking care of the body from the inside out; however, somethings like exfoliation, and skin firming mask needs some outside work as well.
Listen To Something Inspirational
There are numerous videos on line from comedy to motivational speeches. You can also listen to positive upbeat music that makes you want to hop around the house or grab a broom to do a crazy waltz!
What is your favorite thing to do? One of my favorite things to do when I need something uplifting is to listen to Bishop Noel Jones. If you enjoy listening to spiritual stuff, then you can check him out on You Tube. I find him to be very uplifting in his preaching and when I listen to him I feel very powerful. If preaching is not your thing, there are ends of inspirational speakers on You Tube that can really help you get out of the feeling sad or sorry for yourselves’ zone. Besides, if you are stuck in the house for whatever reason, you can listen to the speaker of your choice while doing other task.
Put Your Cooking Skills to The Test
There are some days when you might just be in the mood to experiment with a new recipe. Or, better still, you can make one of your own. Oh! That feeling of pride you get when someone grabs a bite from your dish and ends up wanting to eat the entire dish!
Just recently I made up my own version of vegetable and cheese pie; ingredients included sliced broccoli, cauliflower, celery, flavored green and red peppers, carrots, and a cheese sauce; placed all the ingredients in a bowl, then add more cheese on top and bake until cook. Guess what? This was so delicious that it has now become one of my favorite dishes.
Join A Club
Whether it is an exercise or charity club, being part of an active group can help you in many ways, and not just getting your mind off your long distance relationship. If it is a club which requires charitable acts, you may find a sense of fulfillment helping others who are less fortunate.
Find Your Passion
If the current job you do is not your passion, it is time start thinking about something passionate to do. While I have many passions, I found that I have started taking my writing seriously. After my first letter to my ex long distance partner, he commented “you are so good at expressing love. I think you should really think seriously about pursuing writing.” Though I had been thinking about this for some time, his comments gave me an extra push in the writing direction! Here I am writing my very first blog!
Travel to Some Exciting Destination
Travelling is one of my favorite options to consider! Going on a vacation! If you have vacation days owing or you work at home and can afford to travel, why not take a vacation to some exotic destination? Some people love traveling by themselves, others enjoy having someone else with them to share the excitement. For me, it is the latter! Although I am a person who makes friends easily, I much prefer traveling with someone.
If you live in the Caribbean or one in larger countries like Australia, Europe, the United States you have the option of visiting a different country or the Caribbean where you will find lots of adventure such as hiking, swimming, diving, snorkeling. For those who live in the Caribbean and love the fast life, you may want to visit larger countries like I mentioned above. Before you go, make sure you take the time to research the area you want to go and observe travel safety measures. And, make sure to have fun!
