Hope: The Power of Expectation

Hope: What does it mean to have hope, or feel hopeful? In today’s post, I wish to discuss Hope: The  Power of Expectation. Do you wake up on a day to day basis anticipating what the day has in store? Do you start your day with a prayer of gratitude?  Who do you look to, to keep you feeling hopeful? If you are unemployed, do you search your emails for that one letter that will tell you that your application has been received and is being reviewed? Are you in a relationship but feels like things are not working out? Do you find life to be a constant battle and pray for relief?

Before we go any further, I’d like for you to meditate on this verse: Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” This, like so many other verses of the bible gives us the strength to wake up and face each day with hopefulness.

To Hope is to Keep on Living

When I think of the word expectation the word hope comes to mind. For to expect something means that you have not given up hope.

And, to be hopeful means you have another shot at life and whatever comes your way! Without some level of expectation or hopefulness our day to day existence will be nothing but a chore.

Without hope we might become suicidal or destructive to others.  We would just go through each day like a puppet, as if we had no choice.  Imagine if the majority of people walked around hopeless…what kind of world would we exist in?

Fear Keeps Us From Being Hopeful

While some people claim they do not expect anything, this statement is not entirely true. Some people are just too scared of being disappointed or let down by themselves and others. For example, a woman or a man in a relationship might have been hurt in the past and in order to prevent being hurt again exist in the relationship without showing their true feelings. They put up a front of “whatever may”, instead of choosing to be brave and hope for the best. Rather than risk getting hurt, they tell themselves they are not expecting anything from anyone. But, not expecting anything from anyone is one thing, for as we know, people will change their minds. But not expecting that life can turn out beautiful is an entirely different story; it means that the person is using their current situation to predict how their future will be.

An individual has been working for a company for years, yet have never applied for a promotion. Why? Is it because of fear that they will get rejected? Or maybe fear of not being able to fulfill the roles that come with the position they so secretly want.

Never Give Up Hope

It is important to be optimistic in everything we do, but we must always be mindful that things will not always turn out the way we want. This is especially so when others outside of ourselves are involved in the situation. But, the fact that we have no control over how each situation in our lives will turn out does not mean we should give up. Instead, we should try to focus on the positive things in our lives and see each relationship, failure, or event as an opportunity to grow. Life is a Journey.

Expectation helps us to move forward in life’s journey. Regardless of how yesterday ended, hope tells us we should start today with a spring in our step! Always be hopeful and expect that something new is always on the horizon just waiting to be discovered.
