I believe that a healthy spiritual life is essential for living and aging gracefully. When you are living in the true essence of the word, it means that you have peace of mind and you are contented with where you are in life. You must realize that having everything do not mean you would be happy: at least not if we do not have peace of mind. You would never be content if you do not express gratitude. You also need to have a source to go to for revival of your internal energy and comfort; especially during challenging times.

Sometimes we might have everything that we ever wanted but we keep feeling as if something is missing. If this is happening to you, consider that your spiritual aspect of life may be lacking. Look at your spiritual well-being and make it a priority to feed this aspect. A healthy spiritual life would help to create that peace and stave that craving that you may find is currently lacking. When you focus more on your spiritual self, you will pay less attention to the material aspects of your life. Consequently, you will reduce the stress levels that you feel when you focus ONLY on the material things you desire.

Focusing On The Physical Aspect of Your Life

If you do not take care of your physical body, inner and outer, then this will affect a number of things in your life. For one, you are more at risk for developing acute and chronic illnesses usually triggered by lack of activity, and proper food intake, and/or decreased immune system.

What you put on the inside of your body will affect the outside of your body and your physical appearance. Take time to make sure that the majority of foods you eat are healthy. Pay attention to excess sugar, salt, and bad fats intake, as these have been known to contribute to low immune system(excess sugar), high blood pressure( excess salt intake), high cholesterol (bad fats), heart diseases among other diseases.

While you are busy taking care of everyone else, do not forget your self-care; taking care of your outward body. Sometimes we are so busy worrying about all our problems that we forget to take care of ourselves. Always take the time, as often as you can, to care for your hair, skin, nails, and lips. If you cannot afford to purchase body care products, make your own home remedies to save money: doing those things helps keep you looking youthful and aging gracefully.

Focusing On The Environmental/Societal Relationships

Sometimes we are so busy we forget to live and appreciate the beauty around us. When was the last time you looked at your environment?  If you have not been doing so, find time to enjoy nature; walking star gazing, moon light relax, hiking, swimming and any outdoor activity. This physical activity and fresh air will contribute towards you living and aging gracefully.

If you hate your job or you are experiencing some relationship issue seek a positive outlet for this issue. Consider finding something you enjoy doing and focus on it. I read a blog recently where the writer shared her story about overcoming alcoholism. The story she shared is very inspiring. She overcame her addiction to drinking alcohol by focusing on something she felt passionate about doing.

Surround yourself with positive people who encourage you and make you laugh. Good company and laughter keeps you alive and helps you age gracefully.

Not because you are going through a challenging period in your life does not mean that you cannot take care of yourself. It is not that I expect anyone to pretend everything is all-good; however, you should not let your situation affect your response to the people you come into contact. Find a way to smile; it is not that you are faking anything; it is that you are helping to brighten someone else’s day despite your personal struggles. A smile is contagious. Share a smile more often than a frown.

I chose to discuss this topic because I am seeing more and more men being diagnosed with cancer, especially in their 50s and 60s. The video talks about eating healthy as a means of decreasing your chances of developing prostate cancer. Consider including vegetables and fruits in to your diet and decreasing foods which are high in sugar and unhealthy fats. Consider using more organic and fresh foods instead of eating processed foods. Processed foods are less in nutrients  due to processing and may contain chemicals (sometimes used to preeserve the food) which are unhealthy for the body.

Take time to exercise as this helps in strengthening the body’s immune system, increasing blood and oxygen flow to the body.

Ensure that you get adequate amounts of vitamin D, which is necessary for a strong immune system.

As a nurse, I found that men were afraid of getting their prostate checked. Some have told me they do not like the idea of a finger being inserted in their rectum: they have read about it and does not feel comfortable getting it done.

How To Prevent Dry Skin & Irritation From Sea Water

Sea water has been found, according to studies, to have many minerals that is good for the skin as well as clearing clogged pores and other healing effects. I can recall my mother sending me to get a sea bath whenever I had the flu. Whether on not it worked, I am uncertain.  Additionally, many people swear that sea water helps with their eczema, small sores and even their acne. I for one have witnessed the healing effects of frequent visits to the sea with children who had sores on their skin from insect bites. Is salt water from the ocean harmful for your skin? While we appreciate the benefits of sea water, some of us will also like to prevent the extra dry skin and irritation from occurring after a day on the beach. When the skin becomes too dry it can cause discomfort such as continuous itching, which often leads to bruises when we scratch. If you are one of those persons who would rather prevent the dry skin and irritation from occurring while on the beach, then you are not alone. There are times when I am quite okay, and other times when I experience dry skin with irritation. As a result, I prefer to use some sort of protection so that the sand and salt do not cling to my skin. Now the best thing would be to rinse the skin with fresh water, however, fresh water is not always on hand. Therefore, my next go to solution is prevention by taking the following three steps.


  1. Prepare Your Beach Body in Advance

Ladies, if possible, shave a day or two in advance of going to the beach; this will minimize the skin irritation. I have noticed that if I shave on the same day when I go to the beach, my skin itches. Naturally, my reaction to the itching is to scratch, which sometimes leaves obvious scratch marks on my skin.

Shaving a day or two prior to going to the beach allows for healing of the if you experience minor irritation to the hair follicles and the skin from the hair removal cream, waxing, or using a shaver. So that on the day you attend beach you would experience any itching.


  1. Moisturize Your Skin Lavishly

If you are concerned about your skin drying out when you swim, then you should make it a priority to moisturize your skin just before going to the beach, entering the water, or just after bathing in the sea: which ever you prefer. For me, I prefer applying moisturizer before going to the beach or in to a pool.

I find that some moisturizers work better than other moisturizers depending on the main ingredients. You should consider using a skin moisturizer that has an oil base. The reason for an oil-based lotion is that it locks in the moisture in the skin so that the skin does not dry out.

If you chose to apply the moisturizer before going into the water, ensure that you cover all over for maximum protection from salt and sand. When applied properly, oil based moisturizers forms a barrier between the skin and the water in which you swim.

If you chose to apply the moisturizer after swimming in the sea, ensure that you have freshwater available to rinse off the salt water, before applying the lotion.

Personally, I use Coco-butter gel Body Oil (Nourishing Cocoa Butter), which claims to lock in moisture and leave a radiant glow, and for me it does a great job at keeping my skin well oiled.

I have also used coconut oil or coconut oil based moisturizers and found them to be great as well. Then there is Taliah Waajid African Healing Oyl, which smells and feels great on the body.

  1. To Take a Bath or Not Before Applying Moisturizer

I guess it is up to each individual’s preference and comfort whether or not to take a bath before going to the beach. Personally, I take a bath prior, because I find that oil base moisturizes such as cocoa butter gel goes on smoothly when done on a damp skin.

If you have any kind of skin problem such as eczema or psoriasis or any other skin issue or allergy please consult with a dermatologist about using a specific moisturizer.  Also, feel free to seek out information regarding the healing powers of sea water on some skin conditions. I need a remedy for dark armpits, sounds familiar, right? Dark armpits can also be a symptom of a medical condition. However, we will not be talking about discolored armpits due to some underlying condition in this post. Today’s post is mainly for women who have discolored armpit that is more a cosmetic issue than a medical one.

Causes of Dark Armpits

Outside of being a symptom of an underlying medical issue, there are many reasons for dark  armpits. If you are someone who shaves your armpits regularly, you may find that overtime your armpits become dark. Some studies claim shaving the armpit causes irritation of the skin, which results in discoloration.

Secondly, if you are someone who uses deodorant or antiperspirant, you may find that each day there is a build-up of products from these products.

How I Discovered the Remedy For Getting Rid of Dark Armpits

I guess by now you are wondering why I am not telling you the secret remedy. Well, here it is, St. Ives Apricot Scrub, you can read more about the brand by clicking this link.  I always thought that apricot scrub was for exfoliating the face until one day I was reading about dark underarms and home remedies. One of the things that the article suggested was using an exfoliator. I did not have what they suggested in the article so I decided to experiment with the apricot scrub. At first, I did not see much of a difference. However, after almost a week of using this scrub, I noticed that the skin under my armpits started to peel off. All the dark dead skin was peeling off.

I was amazed at how pretty my armpit was looking as the skin peeled away. There was no pain or signs of irritation.

Before I go any further, I should warn you that some people have claimed severe irritation from using St. Ives Apricot Scrub, I therefore, encourage you to read the label and follow instructions regarding use. Personally, I have been using St. Ives Apricot Scrub since 2013 and have never had any irritation or any problems with the brand.

According to the product label, St. Ives Apricot Scrub is for using on the face 3 to 4 times per week.  Therefore, there are no specific steps in applying the scrub to your armpits. I had very dark armpits and signs of build-up and dead skin, so I used the apricot scrub daily until the dead skin peeled off.

If you decide to use this to help clear up your dark armpits, I encourage you to pay close attention to skin to detect early signs of redness or irritation and to stop the use of this scrub if any irritation occurs.

I used the tip of a bath cloth/ wash rag and gently scrubbed my armpits, then rinsed and applied a moisturizer around the edges of my underarm.

Things to Consider Doing in Order to Prevent Dark Armpits

The first thing you should know is that hygiene matters. Sometimes, we do not pay attention to the parts of our body that are not easily seen. Even if you do not wear sleeveless clothing, you should always pay attention to your armpits, not only will this prevent dark skin formation, but also help fight unpleasant under arm odor. You should also consider the following regularly.

  1. Consider the use of new razors rather old ones, which, maybe dull and cause irritation of the skin.
  2. Consider using some form of shaving cream for a smooth shave.
  3. Consider whether to use an antiperspirant or a deodorant. Antiperspirants contain some form of aluminum, which some studies claim are links to breast cancer.

When I was a child, I took one look at watermelon and decided I did not like it. It was not until in my late thirties that I decided to give this wonderful fruit a chance. Ever since that day I tasted it, I have been totally enjoying the fruit.  At present, it is in abundance and one can buy it at a reasonable price.


  1. Watermelon is a thirst quencher; This fruit, as its name suggests, consists mostly of water, it helps prevent you from becoming dehydrated. With every bite, you can enjoy the sweet, its pleasant taste. If you are on the go and do not have time to have a drink of water, just grab a piece of cool watermelon and you are good to go!

When I have                   more than I can eat for a couple of days I slice and wrap individually in clear plastic then store in the freezer.           When I am ready to eat, I allow to thaw just a little before eating; leaving to thaw completely will result in the           fruit becoming limp and all the juices draining out. Personally, I cannot eat the melon when it becomes limp.

Cracked or Dry Heels? The Secret Remedy is Found Right in Your Kitchen

Dry heels! Dry feet!  Cracked heels! Cracked and dry heels are a cosmetic emergency, oh well; maybe I am a bit extreme here, calling it an emergency. But, if you ever had the misfortune to develop cracked or excessively dry heels then you will understand where I am coming from.

Almost everyone gets dry heels from time to time ( so the remedy for cracked heels will be of use to both males and females). However, it does not mean we should shrug our shoulders and be done with it. Usually, dirt and even the end products of body lotions we use, build up on our feet and heels. Overtime, this problem may become very unsightly, or worst, severe dryness can cause cracks on heels and soles of feet. You might find that no matter how much lotion you apply, your heels and feet still look unsightly.

Personal Experience With Cracked Heels:I woke up one morning and noticed a few cracks in my left heel. They were tiny cracks, but nevertheless, I freaked out! When I really sat down and researched the reason for cracked heels, I admitted to myself that I had done this to myself. I was always walking around bare feet and never took care of my heels. When I applied body lotion, I never took the time to make sure my heels were properly moisturized. And so, overtime, those cracks appeared, causing me to take stock.

After experimenting, I found that it was best to soak feet and remove all that build-up, before applying moisturizing lotion to my heels. For a time, I even slept in socks. And it worked. I cannot recall how long it took for the tiny cracks to fade, but thankfully they did. I still make the baking soda or vinegar remedy a part of my beauty routine so I wouldn’t have to deal with that unsightly cracked heel problem again.

Spotting Dry  and Cracked Heels: Now I look around me on a daily basis and I can’t help but look at people’s heels. You can say I have a natural eye for spotting dry and unsightly heels. That’s where my baking soda and vinegar remedy comes in. These two ingredients are almost always present in the kitchen and are inexpensive compared to all the popular foot care brands on the market.


Baking Soda and the Vinegar Remedy: There are two different remedies I use for Dry Feet and Heels: the Baking Soda and the Vinegar remedy. For me, I find that either one works very well to remove buildup of dirt and dryness to heels and feet.


Steps 1. Simply add 2 to 3 table spoons of baking soda to a large bowl containing lukewarm/tepid water.  Or, half cup of vinegar to the water. You can use apple cider or white Vinegar. I personally prefer apple cider vinegar as it is known for its anti-fungal properties, but will use white vinegar when I run out of apple cider. Make sure the bowl is large enough to cover both feet at the same time.

Step 2. Soak feet for approximately 20 minutes to half an hour, depending on the extent of the dryness or build-up. While you soak feet, you can find something to do that does not require you to step out of the water. For example, I take this time to do some writing or respond to emails.


Step 3. After about 20 minutes you can check feet to see whether the slough easily comes off. You can do this by using your finger nail or one of those abrasive finger nail files and gently rub it against your heel. You should notice while dirt peeling easily, if feet are properly soaked. If no slough appears leave a little longer then try again. The amount of slough will depend on severity of the build up


Step 4. Once the slough easily peels away, gently rub against the entire heel, soles (pay attention to the arch of your foot where build up tend to be excessive than other areas), between toes and on top of your feet and ankles, always gently remove any dead skin around your nails. I usually remove all nail polish before I do my foot soak so that my toes get cleaned too. Do the same for the other foot. Make sure to place a foot towel near you so you can place each foot as you complete each foot. Read this blog I found about 12 Surprising Personal Uses for Baking Soda.

Step 5. Dry feet properly, then apply lotion of your choice. You can soak feet before or after a bath. I enjoy doing so after a bath so I do not need to wash off the baking soda water from my nails. If done properly, your feet should feel soft and smooth immediately upon drying.

For people with cracked heels, you may wish to make it a nightly habit to apply lotion to your feet then put on a pair of socks. This will help to retain the moisture on your feet. Overtime, it will also reduce the unsightliness of the cracks.

Note: By no means is the baking soda or vinegar solution a substitute for any severe foot condition such as severely cracked heels. For personalized care, consult a medical professional. You have a hectic work schedule and although you know that drinking fluids (preferably water) is the key to keeping moist lips, you just can’t seem to find the time to hydrate yourself.


To make it worst, you work in an environment where you mingle with others, and you feel self-conscious because you know that your lips are dry and flaky, and your lipstick can not hide the problem. You try petroleum and gloss, but that too is temporary. What else could you do?


In today’s post, I give you the honey, baking soda, and olive oil mixture.  I know this works because I have tried it many times. Check out this article on 10 Health Benefits of Honey. So here it goes: In order to keep those beautiful lips of yours moist throughout the day, check out the following steps in the Honey Mixture:


Step 1: Use a mixture of ½ teaspoon honey, ½ teaspoon baking soda, and a ¼ teaspoon olive (coconut oil if you do not have olive oil). The honey helps to moisturize and soften, the baking soda exfoliates the dead tissue, and the oil helps to maintain the natural silkiness of the lips, by locking in moisture throughout the day.



Step 2: Mix the ingredients until smooth then apply to lips with your fingertips.

Step 3: Leave the paste on for a few minutes to help soften any dead tissue.

Step 4: Gently rub lips with your fingertips or the edge of a soft wash cloth.

Step 4: Rinse with water and pat dry

Step 5: Apply moisturizer or lipstick as desired.


Note: the lips are very delicate, while this mixture is very gentle, excessive amount of rubbing can cause bruising. To avoid irritation and blisters, do not use this method more than twice weekly. This baking soda mixture should not be used to replace adequate fluid intake. If dryness remains after using this once or twice, it is more likely that you are dehydrated and needs to drink more fluid.

*Also remember to do this last after bathing and brushing teeth since soap and toothpaste have a tendency to dry out the skin.
